Job description

The Institute of Innovation & Entrepreneurship (IIE) anchors the Area of Excellence in Innovation at the Singapore Management University (SMU). IIE is a practice-oriented institute that fosters innovation and entrepreneurship excellence at SMU and beyond.  

IIE’s activities range from innovation & entrepreneurship events, competitions and workshops, to training programmes, study missions and internships for budding student entrepreneurs. In addition, IIE runs a full-fledged incubation programme that helps aspiring entrepreneurs take their ideas to market.

In the past year, IIE launched the first student-led venture fund in Southeast Asia, Protégé Ventures, in partnership with Kairos ASEAN. IIE also organized the 9th Lee Kuan Yew Global Business Plan Competition (LKYGBPC), the most prestigious business plan competition in the region. The LKYGPC connects and brings in the best student entrepreneurial talent from across the globe; in September 2017, 36 finalist teams flew into Singapore to compete for 1 million dollars’ worth of prizes, and were mentored by senior industry professionals such as Michael Seibel, CEO of Y Combinator. 

SMU-IIE is opening up the position of Executive, Strategy. Executives of this position will:

  • Conduct review of all IIE programs – e.g. desktop research to compare these programmes with similar programmes at other universities or interview the principals of the programmes and the key ecosystem stakeholders.
  • Identify key improvement areas and implement improvement measures across regional network
  • Plan and prepare entire event programs targeted at different end-stakeholders
  • Launch of marketing campaigns
  • Design of new program and work with individual managers to ensure all training requirements are met
  • Analyse current and potential business plans and research on potential markets (i.e. Economic viability, Competitor’s pricing etc.)
  • Pro-actively identify gaps of product and brand knowledge and work with Business Manager to rectify gaps

This internship program is based in Singapore Management University, Singapore. Candidates must be willing to commit full-time for 8 weeks minimum (10 weeks maximum) from June to August 2018.  

Candidates must secure their own external source of funding for the internship.

  • A passion and strong interest in innovation and entrepreneurship 
  • Undergraduates in Sophomore and Junior year
  • Well-organised, attention to detail and good communication skills 
  • Proactive team-oriented player who is able to work independently 
  • Excellent interpersonal, problem solving and process-thinking skills 
  • Articulate and communicate well in both verbal and written form
  • Prior exposure in entrepreneurial area or interest to pursue a career in Singapore
