Job description

The Institute of Innovation & Entrepreneurship (IIE) anchors the Area of Excellence in Innovation at the Singapore Management University (SMU). IIE is a practise-oriented institute that fosters innovation and entrepreneurship excellence at SMU and beyond.  

IIE’s activities range from innovation & entrepreneurship events, competitions and workshops, to training programmes, study missions and internships for budding student entrepreneurs. In addition, IIE runs a full-fledged incubation programme that helps aspiring entrepreneurs take their ideas to market.

In the past year, IIE launched the first student-led venture fund in Southeast Asia, Protégé Ventures, in partnership with Kairos ASEAN. IIE also organized the 9th Lee Kuan Yew Global Business Plan Competition (LKYGBPC), the most prestigious business plan competition in the region. The LKYGPC connects and brings in the best student entrepreneurial talent from across the globe; in September 2017, 36 finalist teams flew into Singapore to compete for 1 million dollars’ worth of prizes, and were mentored by senior industry professionals such as Michael Seibel, CEO of Y Combinator. 


IIE’s Innovation Academy offers the SMU Entrepreneur Experience, which combines immersive educational programmes, mentor-ship, and incubation to develop the next generation of entrepreneurs. IIE also grooms up-and-coming Venture Capitalists (VCs) through Protégé Ventures, the first student venture fund in Southeast Asia – launched in August 2017. 


SMU-IIE is opening up the position of Executive, Innovation Academy. Executives of this position will:


  • Coordinate the Student Entrepreneur Internship, a joint effort with the SMU Career Centre to allow student entrepreneurs to work on their own start-ups over the summer to fulfill their internship requirement.
  • Design new Entrepreneurship Study Missions, which combines a SMU 1-term course with a week-long study trip; throughout the term, students tackle a co-defined problem statement with client start-ups in their destination countries.
  • Conduct a review of the pilot year for Protégé Ventures

Requirements

This internship program is based in Singapore Management University, Singapore. Candidates must be willing to commit full-time for 8 weeks minimum (10 weeks maximum) from June to August 2018


Candidates must secure their own external source of funding for the internship.

  • Top-notch writing and research skills
  • Prior experience in program design, management and evaluation
  • A passion and strong interest in innovation and entrepreneurship
  • Undergraduates in Sophomore and Junior year
  • Excellent interpersonal, problem solving and process-thinking skills 
  • Articulate and communicate well in both verbal and written form
