The Institute of Innovation & Entrepreneurship (IIE) anchors the Area of Excellence in Innovation at the Singapore Management University (SMU). IIE is a practise-oriented institute that fosters innovation and entrepreneurship excellence at SMU and beyond.
IIE’s activities range from innovation & entrepreneurship events, competitions and workshops, to training programmes, study missions and internships for budding student entrepreneurs. In addition, IIE runs a full-fledged incubation programme that helps aspiring entrepreneurs take their ideas to market.
In the past year, IIE launched the first student-led venture fund in Southeast Asia, Protégé Ventures, in partnership with Kairos ASEAN. IIE also organized the 9th Lee Kuan Yew Global Business Plan Competition (LKYGBPC), the most prestigious business plan competition in the region. The LKYGPC connects and brings in the best student entrepreneurial talent from across the globe; in September 2017, 36 finalist teams flew into Singapore to compete for 1 million dollars’ worth of prizes, and were mentored by senior industry professionals such as Michael Seibel, CEO of Y Combinator.
IIE previously established the Business Innovations Generator (BIG) in 2009 to support big ideas. BIG helps innovators realize their entrepreneurial dreams, and provides an environment that harnesses and cultivates the budding talent within. It does so by providing a dedicated incubation space, with an ecosystem of established mentors, access to potential partners, and connections to government and private funding. BIG has incubated 170 start-ups, including Tech in Asia, a top regional tech media company, and Homage, which was lauded by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong during his recent National Day Rally in 2017 for using technology to increase the reach of on-demand care-giving services for elderly in Singapore.
